ACC Assistant Director Abdul Wadud has filed a case with Ramna police over the incident
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday detained SM Nazmul Haque, chief engineer of the Shipping Department, after he was caught red handed taking a Tk5 lakh bribe.
An ACC team led by Dhaka Divisional Office Director Nasim Anwar captured Nazmul in a sting operation at a hotel in the Segunbagicha area of the capital.
Sources said representatives of M/S Syed Shipping went to Nazmul for a no objection certificate and approval of the design of its ship, the MV Prince of Sohag. However, the Shipping Department chief engineer demanded Tk15 lakh in bribes from the firm for the documents.
Subsequently, M/S Syed Shipping informed the ACC, and the anti-graft watchdog caught Nazmul red handed by posing as if they had come to hand over the first installment of the bribe.
Confirming news of the incident, ACC Assistant Director (Public Relations) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya said a case had been filed with Ramna police against Nazmul. ACC Assistant Director Abdul Wadud filed the case.
Earlier last year, the ACC had issued a letter to Nazmul, his wife, and other dependents, asking them to provide financial statements, due to suspicions over vast quantities of undeclared wealth and assets in their possession. Nazmul did not provide the statements, claiming he only owned a few assets in Dhaka, Khulna, and Narayanganj.
