Ansar Ahmed Ullah : Community activist, journalist, popular face in the UK Shahab Uddin Ahmed Belal passed away today, in Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel where he was undergoing treatment, Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
Shahab Uddin Ahmed Belal, was popularly known as Belal bhai to his colleagues or S U Ahmed Belal as he preferred to call himself, was an activist in the UK during 1970s, 1980s, 1990s campaigning against racism and fighting for Bengali rights.
Belal bhai had been suffering from cardiovascular illness for a while. He had bypass operations and recently had a pacemaker fitted in. Belal bhai was recently admitted to hospital following his health deterioration. On Thursday 25 January doctors at the hospital informed his family members of his deteriorating condition. Belal bhai died on 26 January Friday afternoon around 3pm.
Apart from being a prolific community activist he was the ex-Joint Secretary of European Bangabandhu Parishod, Sylhet District Chatro League activist, Member of UK Awami League Advisory Committee, founder Secretary of UK Jubo League, Labour Party activist & Tower Hamlets Councillor amongst many other organisations.
Bela bhai leaves behind his wife, four sons and a daughter. He was originally from Chandagram, Beanibazar, Sylhet.
Belal bhai’s Janaja will be held on Saturday, 27 January at East London Mosque and will be buried in Garden of Peace, Hainault.
