10 DU students hurt as BCL sweeps VC office siege

At least 10 students of Dhaka University got hurt in an attack on them allegedly by some leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Tuesday on the varsity campus.

Awami League-backed BCL men reportedly assaulted the agitating students who besieged the DU Vice Chancellor for four hours at his office demanding withdrawal of a case the varsity administration filed recently against some ‘unnamed’ students, removal of Proctor Golam Rabbani, solving the crisis over affiliated colleges and punishing BCL men, allegedly responsible for harassing some female students.

The injured include Bangladesh Chhatra Union General Secretary Liton Nandi and DU unit President of Chhatra Federation Umme Habiba Benazir. The other injured are; Mir Arshadul Haque, Abu Raihan Khan, Tajwer Mahmud, Rajib Kumar Das, Masud al Mahadi Apu, Rasel, Jafarul Nadim, and Jahar Lal Ray.

Around midday today over a hundred students took out a procession around from the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla, broke the collapsible gate of the office of Vice Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman, kept him confined there for over four hours.

They chanted slogans and demanded withdrawal of the case the varsity filed against the ‘unnamed’ students in sequel to recent students’ protest over affiliation of seven colleges.

At one stage, more than 30 leaders and activists of BCL led by its central General Secretary SM Zakir Hossain reached the spot and asked them to leave the VC office around 4:00pm. But the protesters did not agree to leave the place. Then the BCL men reportedly assaulted them, leaving 10 of them injured.

Umme Habiba Benazir, an injured student leader, alleged BCL men attacked them in front of the people of the varsity administration.
