Bangladesh is blessed with the climate and geography to be able to produce the best quality jute in the world.
And yet, many state-owned jute mills around the country have operated in a disastrously inefficient manner, and incurred massive losses.
On the other hand, private mills have demonstrated better management in every way and have turned profits.
Right now, state-owned jute mills take up vast swathes of land which lie unused — needless to say, that is enormously wasteful.
When privatised, jute mills can provide thousands of jobs without incurring crores in losses. It is, therefore, imperative that these factories be operated by competitive private firms. Otherwise, we would be leaving one of the nation’s most precious resources in incompetent hands.
