Speakers at a press conference organised by Stepney Shahjalal mosque urged everyone to come together and help to build its multimillion pound building complex.
On a written statement, leaders of the mosque committee mentioned that Tower Hamlets is the heart of Bengali community. People from Bangladesh a other Muslims are living here for years and years. The Ocean New Deal project and several regeneration programmes have brought a lot of change to this area. However, this was not quite the case for Stepney Shajalal Mosque. The mosque committee wants the changes to affect Stepney Shajalal Mosque too and it will only be possible with the help from the community. With everyone’s help, the construction project can be completed in 18 months. Otherwise there is a possibility that the work can no longerrun.
The Chairman of the mosque committee Dr Mohammod Ali read the press release in front of the audience. Other leaders who were present at the press conference included Secretary Fool Miah, Treasurer Ali Sadat and Khatib Maolana Tajul Islam and other leaders.
The press release also read that in 1980’s people in this area did not have a proper place to pray and hence used each other’s house for praying. In 1985 this mosque was established temporarily in Sandy Park which was bought as freehold later on. In 2010, the mosque committee managed to achieve planning permission for the mosque with design approval. Last year the construction work for the new purpose built mosque has started. The estimated budget for this project is 3 million pound. The first phase of work has started with only half million pound. The committee has drawn out many emergency plans for raising fund and welcoming any types of donation. The committee has already announced a special fund raising campaign of one thousand pounds each family. However, anyone can expand their hands of help by donating only 50 pounds. There are three thousand families in Stepeny. If everyone does a standing order of one thousand pound each, the dream of the purpose built mosque in Stepney will become true.
When talking about activities, the press release read as well as praying, there are Tafsirs and adult Quran learning classes are taking place. In addition there are Evening Madrasa, Week End Madrasa, Hifjul Quran Class, Summer school and separate space of praying for women.
When the construction will be completed, the mosque will be able accommodate three thousand prayers.
Guests who attended the press conference included Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs, Deputy Mayor Sirajul Islam, former Leader Helal Abbas, former Deputy Mayor Cllr Ohid Ahmed, former Development Lead Member Cllr Rabina Khan, Prinicipal Imam of East London Mosque Shaikh Abdul Qayum, Chair of Council of Mosque Maolana Shamsul Haque, Imam of Brick Lane Mosque Maolana Najrul Islam, former Amir of Dawatul Islam Maolana Mowdud Hasan and other community leaders and seniors of the local area.
In the end the press release also said that anyone can any part of the UK can donate and be there with this project.
