Mayor Rahman: New police officers to support local community

The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman has announced that funding will be set aside for six new police officers for the Borough, in order to assist the Met in building community relationships and making Tower Hamlets a safer place to live.Tower Hamlets can be proud of its record on community policing in recent years, from its ‘Dealer a Day’ initiative which has saw over 1200 drug dealers taken off the streets in the first three years of its operation, to the success of new CCTV and mobile camera units in hotspots to the absence of rioting seen elsewhere across London in 2011.This additional support, using money taken from savings in council management, will come as a further boost to the local area. Successful police-council partnerships in the Borough mean that police not only resolve safety concerns and prevent crime but also play an active role in facilitating a healthier, happier and more cohesive community.

Mayor Lutfur Rahman said:

“I look forward to these six new officers joining myself, the new Borough Commander and the council in working together for a safer Tower Hamlets. I’m glad this extra step to support safety and community welfare is being taken.”

Ohid Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Community Safety said:

“The partnerships we have built with the police here do a great job in keeping our streets safe and also going the extra mile to help out residents. Frontline officers doing their rounds are a reassuring sight for many residents and I am glad we have set aside funding for this purpose.”
