Sunday, 9 November: Police foiled an attempt to grab a water body by a gang in Gowainghat upazila early yesterday.
At least 13 cops were injured as the gang members swooped on the law enforcers at Birkuli village. Four of the gang were arrested on the spot while the rest managed to flee.
Receiving information that a gang led by one Abdul Monaf of the village were trying to illegally occupy Thubri Shilchan Jalmohal in the area, a police team went to the village at around 2:30am.
Sensing the presence of the policemen, Monaf’s men opened fire and hurled brick chips on the law enforcers, leaving 13 of them injured.
Police fired at least 74 rubber bullets, dispersed the attackers and brought the situation under control, said Officer-in- Charge Md Abdul Hai of Gowainghat Police Station.
The injured cops took treatment at the upazila heath complex. Sub-Inspector Khairul Bashar of the police station filed a case yesterday against 17 named and 150 unnamed people for attacking police.
Tirtho Ranjan Das, lessee of the water body also filed a case against Monaf for his bid to occupy the water body, the OC added.
Police said Monaf is an accused in at least 13 criminal cases filed Gowainghat and Sylhet Airport police stations.
